Michael Bar-Zohar ( Hebrew מיכאל בר-זהר, Born January 30, 1938 in Sofia , Bulgaria ) is an Israeli historian, politician and writer of Bulgarian origin.

Bar-Zohar came to Israel in 1948 at the age of ten. His family settled near Jaffa . He completed his schooling in Tel Aviv and then began economics at the University in Jerusalem to study. Later moved to the University of Paris to study political science there; he was able to complete this course with a doctorate .

In 1956 he joined the army and took part in the war during the Suez Crisis in 1956 and eleven years later in the Six Day War . In 1973 Bar-Zohar was a member of a commando unit that fought partially behind the front in the Yom Kippur War .

In 1958 Bar-Zohar was appointed one of the editors of the weekly newspaper Davar . In addition to his journalistic work, Bar-Zohar also wrote several books; u. a. also a highly acclaimed biography of the politician David Ben-Gurion . For the publication of his fiction works, he chose the pseudonym Michael Barak .
