Beat Näf

Beat Näf (born April 24, 1957 in Brugg ) is a Swiss ancient historian .

Beat Näf studied history, philosophy and political science at the University of Zurich from 1977 to 1982 . In 1984 he passed his diploma in history and philosophy for a higher teaching post. A year later he received his doctorate in general history, the subject of the dissertation was From Pericles to Hitler? The Athenian democracy and the ancient German history up to 1945 . Between 1983 and 1989, Näf worked as a lecturer at several high schools in Zurich and Aargau . In addition, he became an assistant to Franz Georg Maier for four years in 1984 and a member of the Istituto Svizzero di Roma in 1990 . Also in 1990 he became senior assistant at the History Department of the University of Zurich. The habilitation took place in 1992 on the subject of senatorial class awareness in late Roman times . In 1994 Näf became assistant professor, 1997 associate professor and 2004 professor for ancient history at the University of Zurich.

Näf researches especially on late antiquity as well as the history of ancient studies and the reception of antiquity . In the Kulturwege project he is involved in the development of multimedia products that can make historical information available to users at the right time and place. In addition to Franz Georg Maier (head and editor of the series "Excavations in Old Paphos in Cyprus") and Marie-Louise von Wartburg as well as other researchers, he was involved in the research project on Old Paphos of the German Archaeological Institute and the University of Zurich. His research on late antiquity is devoted to sacred buildings, sacred topographies and the cult of Saint Mauritius . Näf was the specialist editor at the New Pauly . In 2013 he received the Ausonius Prize from the Center for Classical Studies at Trier University .

Beat Näf is married to the CVP politician Ruth Humbel and has two children with her.
