Christian Marek
Christian Marek (born September 25, 1950 in Kassel ) is a German ancient historian and epigraphist .
Christian Marek studied history , classical philology and philosophy at the Universities of Marburg and Cambridge . He passed his state examination in 1971 and received his doctorate in Marburg in 1982 with the thesis Die Proxenie . 1989 also took place in Marburg the habilitation. He then became a university assistant at the university. In 1989 he took over a professorship at the University of Siegen . In 1990 Marek became a university lecturer at the University of Marburg. In 1992/93 he was a research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton . In 1993 Marek was appointed to the University of Zurich and began teaching in 1994 as an associate professor. In 2000 he was appointed head of the history seminar and in 2001 he was appointed full professor in Zurich. For the academic year 2012/2013 he received the Gerda Henkel Scholarship for a research stay at Brown University . In 2016 he retired.
Marek is primarily concerned with the historical geography of Asia Minor as well as the ancient history of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East . Marek has been conducting field research and epigraphic studies in Asia Minor since the first half of the 1980s. He is currently working on an edition of the inscriptions from Pompeiopolis in Paphlagonia and an addition to his corpus of the inscriptions from Kaunos in Caria.
