Historia (magazine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Historia (subtitle Zeitschrift für Alte Geschichte - Revue d'Histoire Ancienne - Journal of Ancient History - Rivista di Storia Antica ) is a peer-reviewed international scientific journal on ancient history . It is one of the most important journals for its field and was in sixth place in the Scientific Journal Ranking 2017 among the most important international journals in antiquity.

The Historia was founded in 1950 by Karl Friedrich Stroheker and Gerold Walser . The new magazine was supposed to compensate for the loss of the Klio , whose rights were now in eastern Germany.

As can be seen from the extensive title, the magazine has a very international focus; as a rule, at most a quarter of the content comes from Germany, with a decreasing trend. In the Historia , longer scientific treatises ("essays") and shorter articles (" miscells ") are published in German , English , French and Italian . It is not aimed at interested laypeople, but rather at a specialist scientific audience. The Historia appears quarterly, each partial edition has 128 pages. The pages are numbered consecutively, as the partial deliveries together form a volume - e.g. Historia, vol. 64, 2015 . The magazine is published by Franz Steiner Verlag .

The Historia is overseen by an international board of editors, which since the end of 2019 has consisted of Kai Brodersen , Hans van Wees , Henriette van der Bloom , Christelle Fischer-Bovet, Sabine Panzram and Mischa Meier . The Advisory Board currently includes Arnaldo Marcone , Bernhard Linke , Kurt Raaflaub , Aloys Winterling , François Paschoud , Martin Jehne , Mortimer Chambers , Walter Scheidel , Denis Feissel , Elizabeth A. Meyer and John Scheid . Alongside Chiron and Klio , it is the most important specialist journal for ancient history to be published in Germany, and it is the most important of the three journals internationally. The vast majority of contributions in the last 20 years were from authors in the USA, followed by Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Australia, Canada and France and 20 other nationalities.

Thematically, the Historia deals primarily with the historical sub-areas of classical antiquity , i.e. ancient Greece including Hellenism and the Roman Empire including late antiquity up to around 600 AD. The main focus is on the political, event, economic , social - and cultural history . But other problems from peripheral areas or neighboring and auxiliary sciences such as archeology , numismatics , epigraphy , papyrology , legal , religious and scientific history can also be the subject of the work.

Each submitted contribution is anonymized and reviewed by at least two independent researchers (mostly professors ) before the editors decide whether to accept the work ( double-blind review, i.e. a double-blind review in which reviewer and reviewer are unknown to one another; English double-blind peer review ). The rejection rate is high.

Historia individual fonts

In addition to the magazine, the also very renowned Historia individual publications have been published in the form of monographs since 1956 ; in some cases, collections of essays on a specific topic appear in the series. The review process corresponds to that of the journal articles. This series currently consists of over 250 individual volumes.
