Aloys Winterling (born April 1, 1956 in Leverkusen ) is a German ancient historian . He is a professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Winterling studied history and German at the University of Cologne from 1974 to 1981 . He completed his studies in 1981 with the first state examination in philology. In 1984 he received his doctorate with Johannes Kunisch at the University of Cologne with an investigation into the early modern court of Cologne. From 1986 to 1992 Winterling worked at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich as an academic advisor and senior assistant to Christian Meier . In 1992 he completed his habilitation in Ancient History and in 1993 accepted a professorship for general history with special consideration of ancient history at Bielefeld University . In 2002 he switched to a position as full professor for ancient history and historical anthropology at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , where he became vice dean of the Philosophical Faculty at the end of 2004 . Since October 1, 2007, Winterling has succeeded Jürgen von Ungern-Sternberg as Professor of Ancient History at the University of Basel . Since February 2009 he has been Professor of Ancient History at the Humboldt University in Berlin as the successor to Klaus-Peter Johne . Winterling was the managing director of the August Boeckh Antikezentrum at Humboldt University.

Winterling's main research interests are in the area of Greek and Roman social history and historical anthropology . Above all, he has emerged as the author of several monographs and essays on the subject of court and monarchy in antiquity and in the early modern period ; on this subject he has also edited several collections of essays. Winterling's approach is, on the one hand, a diachronic comparison with courtyards, especially those of the early modern period. In addition, he proposed not to reproduce the topoi of ancient and modern court criticism - for example of informal court structures such as intrigues and clique formation - but to take the communicative structures at courts - including informal ones - seriously and analyze them as such. Other research focuses are the Greek philosopher Aristotle and the German sociologist Max Weber .

Furthermore, Winterling presented a highly regarded biography of the Roman emperor Caligula , which has been translated into several languages. In it he endeavored to correct the image of Caligula , which was marked by the negative portrayal in senatorial historiography , as a ruler afflicted by the " Caesarean madness ": Caligula was more of a cynical power man who demonstrated the absurdity of the ruling structures in the early Principate period through drastic actions found himself in constant conflict with the senatorial upper class, who eventually eliminated him and, to justify themselves, attributed insanity to him.

Winterling is an advisor to the journal Historia , of which he was one of the editors for several years, as well as editor of the series Campus Historische Studien of the Campus Verlag . In addition, he published the Encyclopedia of Greco-Roman Antiquity ( Oldenbourg Verlag , Munich) until 2018 .
