Sitta Valerie Ilse Alberta von Reden (born August 29, 1962 in Hanover ) is a German ancient historian and lecturer at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg . Her research focus is on ancient economic, social and cultural history.

Life

Sitta von Reden studied economics and history at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , then at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Cambridge Classical Philology and History. After passing the state examination at the Free University of Berlin in 1987, she received her doctorate in ancient history in Cambridge in 1993 with the thesis Studies in Market and Exchange in Ancient Athens . Her dissertation was awarded the prize for the best dissertation in Great Britain (Ancient History and Archeology Section) from the Hellenic Foundation in Oxford. After several years of teaching and research at various British universities , she completed her habilitation in 2005 at the University of Augsburg with the font Monetization in 3rd-century BC Egypt and then taught as a private lecturer in ancient history at the Philological-Historical Faculty of the University of Augsburg Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster and the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich . Von Reden declined a call to the University of Pennsylvania in 2006.

Since April 1, 2010, von Reden has been Professor of Ancient History with a focus on Greek History at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. In March 2017 she received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for her project Beyond the Silk Road , endowed with 2.5 million euros.

Von Reden is married and has two children.
