New York gubernatorial election 1804
The New York gubernatorial election of 1804 took place in April 1804, where the governor and lieutenant governor of New York were elected.
Candidates
Morgan Lewis joined John Broome for the Clintonian faction in the Democratic Republican Party . For the Federalists , Aaron Burr stood with Oliver Phelps , who belonged to the Tammany Hall faction in the Democratic Republican Party. Burr was acting Vice President of the United States at the time of the election and a former member of the aforementioned party.

Aaron Burr blamed his long-time rival Alexander Hamilton , who led a character assassination campaign against him , for his significant defeat in the election . In a duel on July 11th that year, Burr fatally wounded Hamilton and was subsequently accused of murder in two states , but was never tried for it.
