New York gubernatorial election 1834
The New York gubernatorial election of 1834 took place between November 3rd and 5th, 1834, and the governor and lieutenant governor of New York were elected.
This was the first election that the Whig Party performed at. The Democratic Party nominated incumbent Governor William L. Marcy . The nomination on the part of the Whig Party was more complicated, ultimately the young William H. Seward was able to prevail against Amos P. Granger , Daniel C. Verplanck and other candidates, among others . During the campaign, the Democratic press accused Seward of his young age, and the Whig Party responded with examples of other well-known officials, including DeWitt Clinton , who came into office at a young age.
Marcy competed with John Tracy as a running mate . Seward competed with Silas M. Stilwell as running mate.
