Amos P. Granger

Amos Phelps Granger (born June 3, 1789 in Suffield , Connecticut , † August 20, 1866 in Syracuse , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1859 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Francis Granger was his cousin.

Career

Amos Granger was born in Hartford County about six years after the War of Independence ended . He attended public schools. In 1811 he moved to Manlius (New York), where he was mayor of the city for several years. During the ensuing British-American War , he served as a captain at Sackets Harbor and on the Canadian border . He moved to Syracuse in 1820, where he pursued numerous businesses. Between 1825 and 1830 he was a trustee of Syracuse. During this time he was in charge of greeting General Lafayette when he visited Syracuse in 1825. In 1852 he attended the Whig National Convention as a delegate . He later joined the opposition party . In the 1854 congressional election for the 34th Congress , Granger was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Daniel T. Jones on March 4, 1855 . In the following years he joined the Republican Party . In 1856 he was elected to the 35th Congress . Since he refused to run for re-election in 1858 , he resigned from Congress after March 3, 1859 . Granger retired from active business activities. He died about a year after the end of the Civil War and was then buried in Oakwood Cemetery .
