Edward C. Reed

Edward Cambridge Reed (born March 8, 1793 in Fitzwilliam , New Hampshire , † May 1, 1883 in Ithaca , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1831 and 1833 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Cambridge Reed was born in Cheshire County about ten years after the War of Independence ended . He attended community schools. In 1812 he graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover . During the British-American War he served under Governor William L. Marcy . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1816, he began practicing in Homer . Between 1822 and 1870 he was Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Cortland Academy in Homer. During that time, he became a district attorney in Cortland County in 1827 - a post he held until 1836. In 1830 he was admitted to the Court of Chancery . Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction.

In the 1830 congressional elections for the 22nd Congress , Reed was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Thomas Beekman on March 4, 1831 . He retired from the after March 3, 1833 Congress of.

After his time at the congress he worked as a lawyer again. In 1836 he became associate judge on the Court of Common Pleas in Cortland County - a post he held until 1840. In 1856 he worked again as a district attorney. In 1875 he moved to Ithaca. There he continued to work as a lawyer. He died on May 1, 1883 and was then buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Homer.
