Claudia Tenney (* 4 February 1961 in New Hartford , Oneida County , New York ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . From 2017 to 2019, she represented the 22nd Congressional constituency of New York State in the United States House of Representatives .

Family, education and work

Tenney studied at Colgate University between 1979 and 1983 . After completing a law degree at Taft College of Law , which is part of the University of Cincinnati , she was admitted to the bar in 1987. In addition to her other activities, she still works in this profession today. In the meantime she was employed for some time at the consulate of the then Republic of Yugoslavia . In addition, she worked for the family-owned press company Tenney Media Group between 1997 and 2004 as an editor and consultant. She was also employed by a few other media companies, some of whom she was even a co-owner. Since 2001 she has also been working as a radio presenter. In her home country she is a member of numerous organizations and associations.

Political career

Between 2010 and 2016 she was a member of the New York State Assembly , from 2010 for the 110th, from 2012 for the 101st constituency. In 2014 she ran for Congress for the first time , but failed in the primary election of her party in New York's 22nd congressional electoral district with long-time mandate holder Richard L. Hanna with just 46.5 to 53.5 percent of the vote. In the 2016 election , Hanna did not stand for re-election, after which Tenney was elected as a Republican candidate in the primary. In the main election in November 2016, Tenney was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 22nd Congressional constituency against the Democrat Kim Myers , where she succeeded Hannas on January 3, 2017. Before the 2018 election , it was considered endangered; most observers predicted a completely open election, in some cases with slight advantages for their Democratic challenger Anthony Brindisi . In the end, she lost the election against Brindisi by 1,293 votes, leaving the House of Representatives in January 2019.
