George Van Horn

George Van Horn (born February 5, 1850 in Otsego , New York , † May 3, 1904 in Cooperstown , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Van Horn was born in Otsego County about two years after the end of the Mexican-American War . He attended community schools, the Cooperstown Seminary and the New Berlin Academy . His youth was overshadowed by the civil war. He studied law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1871, he began practicing in Cooperstown. He was elected clerk in Otsego County in 1881 and re-elected in 1884. He was also elected supervisor in Otsego. He was re-elected twice. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . He was on the Democratic County Committee . In the congressional elections of 1890 for the 52nd Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 24th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded John S. Pindar on March 4, 1891 . In 1892 he suffered a defeat in his re-election and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1893 . After his time in Congress was Vice President of the Second National Bank of Cooperstown - a post he held until his death on May 3, 1904. His body was buried in Lakewood Cemetery .
