Sidney Tracy Holmes (born August 14, 1815 in Schaghticoke , New York , † January 16, 1890 in Bay City , Michigan ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1865 and 1867 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Sidney Tracy Holmes was born in Rensselaer County during the British-American War . In 1819 his family moved to Morrisville , Madison County . There he attended public schools and graduated from Morrisville Academy . After that he taught as a teacher. He worked as a civil engineer on the Chenango and Black River canals for five years . Then he studied law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1841, he began practicing in Morrisville. The Mexican-American War broke out about five years later . Between 1848 and 1851 he was a Loan Commissioner in Madison County. In 1851 he was appointed guardianship and probate judge in Madison County - a post he held until 1864. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1864 for the 39th Congress , Holmes was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd constituency of New York , where he succeeded De Witt Clinton Littlejohn on March 4, 1865 .
