The Paul Grüninger School is a school built in 1996 in the 21st Viennese district of Floridsdorf . It is located south of Hanreitergasse and west of Ocffektgasse. It houses an elementary and a new middle school (college for career guidance).
history
In 1993 the architects Gustav Peichl and Rudolf Weber from Peichl & Partner took over the planning of the school building on behalf of the City of Vienna . Rudolf F. Weber was in charge of the project. Construction began the following year and the building was completed in 1996. School operations began in September 1996. In March 1997, the school was named after the Swiss teacher Paul Grüninger , who was also a football player and from 1919 a police captain in St. Gallen and who in 1938/39 saved several hundred Jewish and other refugees from Nazi persecution and extermination.
In May 2015, a memorial plaque was placed at the school for Sophie (Susi) Haber , one of the Jewish women rescued by Grüninger who initiated the naming of the school and worked there as a contemporary witness.
architecture
The central part of the building is elliptical in shape and has three floors on which the library, administration and break room are located. An inner courtyard can be reached via the break hall. To the east and west of the central building are two four-storey longitudinal structures with half-barrel-shaped roofs, which are connected to it by glazed corridors. In the longitudinal structures there are classrooms and special classrooms, divided according to school type. A gym with a barrel-shaped roof was built in the south and a two-storey day home school in the west.
School profile
The elementary school is an open all-day school , i. H. the afternoon care is not binding, but can only be used on certain days or not at all. Since 2001 the facility has been called UNICEF School with corresponding project work in the classes. English is taught from the first grade. The school currently has 14 classes (as of 2013), including levels 1 to 4 and a preschool class.
The New Middle School is also an open all-day school with a focus on career orientation, creativity and communication. Special offers are e.g. B. Photo group and photo laboratory, co-educational handicrafts , learning, learning and project teaching. Some teachers hold classes as native speakers , elective subjects can also be heard in English. The school has a student parliament and currently 11 classes.
