George W. Cowles

George Washington Cowles (born December 6, 1823 in Otisco , New York , † January 20, 1901 in Clyde , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Washington Cowles was born in Onondaga County about eight years after the end of the British-American War . He attended community schools. In 1845 he graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton . He then taught at a school until 1853. During this period, the Mexican-American War raged between 1846 and 1848 . Cowles was studying law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1854, he began practicing in Clyde, Wayne County . On January 1, 1864, he became a judge at Wayne County Court - a post he held until October 30, 1869. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In the 1868 congressional elections for the 41st Congress , Cowles was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Theodore Medad Pomeroy on March 4, 1869 . Since he on a run again in 1870 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1871 Congress of. After his time at the Congress he went back to his work as a lawyer. He was again a judge at Wayne County Court from January 1, 1874 to January 1, 1880, and from January 1, 1886 to his death . He died in Clyde on January 20, 1901 and was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery .
