Stephen Strong
Stephen Strong (born October 11, 1791 in Lebanon , Connecticut , † April 15, 1866 in Watertown , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1845 and 1847 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Stephen Strong was born in New London County about eight years after the War of Independence ended . He moved to New York. There he attended Hamilton College in Clinton . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law in 1822, he began to practice. Between 1836 and 1838 and between 1844 and 1847 he was District Attorney in Tioga County . He became a judge in Tioga County in 1838 - a post he held until 1843. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .
In the 1844 congressional election for the 29th Congress , Strong was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 22nd constituency of New York , where he succeeded Smith Meade Purdy on March 4, 1845 . He retired from the after March 3, 1847 Congress of. During his Congress time he had presided over the Committee on Expenditures in the US State Department .
After his time at the Congress, he took up his practice as a lawyer in Owego . Between 1855 and 1859 he was again a judge in Tioga County. Strong moved to Watertown, Jefferson County in 1861 , where he continued to practice law. He died there about ten months after the end of the civil war .
