Henry Bennett (born September 29, 1808 in New Lisbon , New York , † May 10, 1868 in New Berlin , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1849 and 1859 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Bennett was born in Otsego County about four years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He attended public schools. Then he studied law . After receiving his license to practice as a lawyer in 1832, he began practicing in New Berlin, Chenango County . In 1846 he was a clerk in New Berlin. The period that followed was overshadowed by the Mexican-American War .

Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party at the time. In the 1848 congressional elections for the 31st Congress , Bennett was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 22nd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Anburn Birdsall on March 4, 1849 . In 1850 he ran in the 21st constituency of New York for the 32nd Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded William W. Snow on March 4, 1851 . He was re-elected three times in a row. During this time his political orientation changed. In 1854 he was elected to the 34th Congress for the Opposition Party and in 1856 to the 35th Congress for the Republican Party . He suffered in 1858 during his candidacy for the 36th Congress defeat and withdrew from the after March 3, 1859 Congress of. During his time in Congress he chaired the Committee on Public Lands (34th Congress).

He then went back to his practice as a lawyer in New Berlin, which he practiced until his death on May 10, 1868. His body was then interred in St. Andrews' Cemetery .
