John T. Spriggs

John Thomas Spriggs (born April 5, 1825 in Peterborough , Great Britain , † December 23, 1888 in Utica , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1883 and 1887 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Thomas Spriggs was during the reign of George IV. In the county of Northamptonshire born. The family immigrated to the United States in 1836 and settled in Whitesboro , Oneida County . He attended Hamilton College in Clinton and then graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1848 . Spriggs studied law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1848, he began practicing in Whitesboro. His student days were overshadowed by the Mexican-American War . In 1853 he was prosecuting attorney in Oneida County and in 1854 County Treasurer . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In 1860 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore . The following years were marked by the civil war . Between 1868 and 1880 he was mayor of Utica. During this time he took part again as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1872 and 1880.

In the 1882 congressional elections for the 48th Congress , Spriggs was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Cyrus D. Prescott on March 4, 1883 . He was re-elected once. 1886 he was defeated in his second re-election bid and then retired from the on March 3, 1887 Congress of. During his last term in office, he chaired the Committee on Accounts .

Then he went back to his activity as a lawyer. He died in Utica on December 23, 1888 and was buried in the Whitesboro cemetery of the same name.
