Amasa Dana (born October 19, 1792 in Wilkes-Barre , Pennsylvania , † December 24, 1867 in Ithaca , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1839 and 1841 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Amasa Dana was born in Lucerne County about nine years after the War of Independence ended . He attended private schools and the Dana Academy in Wilkes-Barre. Then he studied law in Owego . He began practicing after receiving his license to practice law in 1817. In 1821 he moved to Ithaca. There he continued to work as a lawyer. Between 1823 and 1837 he was a district attorney in Tompkins County . Dana was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1828 and 1829 . He was President and Trustee of the Village of Ithaca in 1835, 1836 and 1839 . He was elected in 1837 as a judge on the Court of Common Pleas of Tompkins County. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1838 congressional election for the 26th Congress , Dana was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Cyrus Beers and Hiram Gray on March 4, 1839 , who previously together represented the 22nd district in the US House of Representatives. Since he on a run again in 1840 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1841 Congress of.

After his time at Congress he went back to his practice as a lawyer.

In 1842 he ran in the 26th constituency of New York for the 28th Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Francis Granger on March 4, 1843 . He left the Congress after March 3, 1845. During his time in Congress, he chaired the Committee on Expenditures in the United States Department of the Navy .

After that he worked as a lawyer again, but also went into banking. He died about two years after the end of the civil war in Ithaca and was then buried in the city cemetery.
