Theodore L. Poole

Theodore Lewis Poole (born April 10, 1840 in Jordan , New York , † December 23, 1900 in Syracuse , New York) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1897 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Theodore Poole was born in Onondaga County about six years before the outbreak of the Mexican-American War . The family moved to Syracuse in 1842. There he attended community schools. During the Civil War he enlisted in the 122nd Regiment of the New York Volunteers in July 1862  , where he held the rank of sergeant and served as quartermaster . He was appointed as Captain dismissed and received on 3 July 1865 a promotion to brevet - Major . Between 1868 and 1870 he worked as a county clerkin Onondaga County. He was the United States Pension Agent for the West District of New York between 1879 and 1888 . In 1892 he became Commander of the Department of New York in the Grand Army of the Republic . He was also involved in various manufacturing companies and was a director of the Bank of Syracuse . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the 1894 congressional elections for the 54th Congress , Poole was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 27th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded James J. Belden on March 4, 1895 . He suffered a defeat in the Republican nomination in 1896 for the 55th Congress and then left the Congress on March 3, 1897 .

In 1899 he was appointed US Marshal - a post he held until his death on March 23, 1900. His body was buried in Oakwood Cemetery .
