Ralph Abernethy Gamble (born May 6, 1885 in Yankton , South Dakota , † March 4, 1959 in Saint Michaels , Maryland ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1937 and 1957 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Robert J. Gamble was his father and Congressman John Rankin Gamble was his uncle.

Career

Ralph Abernethy Gamble attended public schools in Yankton and Washington, DC In 1905 he graduated from the Tome Prep School in Port Deposit ( Maryland ), 1909 at the Princeton University , 1911 at the George Washington University Law School in Washington DC and 1912 at the Columbia Law School in New York City . After receiving his bar license in 1913, he began practicing in New York City. Between 1918 and 1933 he was counsel for the town of Mamaroneck and between 1926 and 1928 for Larchmont . He was a member of the New York State Assembly between 1931 and 1937 . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

He was elected to the 75th Congress in a by-election in the 25th  constituency of New York to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Charles D. Millard . He took his seat in the US House of Representatives on November 2, 1937. In the 1938 congressional elections for the 76th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives. He was re-elected twice in a row. In 1944 he ran in the 28th constituency of New York for the 79th Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded William T. Byrne on January 4, 1945 . He was re-elected three times in a row. In the 1952 congressional elections for the 83rd Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 26th constituency of New York, where he succeeded Christopher C. McGrath on January 4, 1953 . He was re-elected once. Since he on a run again in 1956 renounced, he left the after January 3, 1957 Congress of. During his time in Congress, he chaired the Joint Committee on Housing ( 80th Congress ).

He retired and lived in St. Michaels, where he died on March 4, 1959. His body was buried in Hopewell Cemetery in Port Deposit.
