Freeman Clarke

Freeman Clarke (born March 22, 1809 in Troy , New York , † June 24, 1887 in Rochester , New York) was an American politician . Between 1863 and 1865 and between 1871 and 1875 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Freeman Clarke was born in Rensselaer County about three years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He attended community schools. He started working at the age of 15. His first job was as a cashier at the Bank of Orleans in Albion. In 1845 he moved to Rochester. The following year the Mexican-American War broke out. Clarke has served as director and president of numerous banks, railways, telegraph and trust companies in Rochester and New York City . Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party at the time. In 1852 he attended the Whig National Convention in Baltimore as a delegatepart. After the founding of the Republican Party , he joined this party. He was Vice President of the first Republican State Convention of New York in 1854 .

In the congressional election of 1862 for the 38th Congress , Clarke was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 28th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Robert B. Van Valkenburgh on March 4, 1863 . Since he on a run again in 1864 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1865 Congress of. His time at Congress was overshadowed by the civil war.

He was appointed Comptroller of the Currency in 1865 - a post he held from March 9, 1865 to February 6, 1867. In 1867 he took part as a delegate to the New York Constituent Assembly .

In the congressional elections of 1870 , he ran for the 42nd Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Charles H. Holmes on March 4, 1871 . In 1872 he was elected to the 43rd Congress in the 29th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Seth Wakeman on March 4, 1873 . He then resigned from Congress after March 3, 1875.

After his time at the Congress he went back to his previous business activities. He died on June 24, 1887 in Rochester. His body was then interred in Mount Hope Cemetery .
