Career

Burt Van Horn grew up on a farm and attended public schools in his homeland. He then graduated from Yates Academy in Orleans County and Hamilton College , now Colgate University . In the following years he worked in agriculture in Niagara County. Later he worked in the clothing industry. Politically, he joined the Republican Party that was formed at that time in the 1850s . Between 1858 and 1860 he was a member of the New York State Assembly .

In the congressional election of 1860 , Van Horn was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 31st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Edwin R. Reynolds on March 4, 1861 . By March 3, 1863, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress that was shaped by the events of the civil war . In the elections of 1864 Van Horn was re-elected to Congress in the 29th district of his state, where he replaced Augustus Frank on March 4, 1865 . After being re-elected, he could spend two more legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1869. Since 1865, the work of Congress had been weighed down by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial. In 1865 and 1868 the 13th and 14th amendments to the Constitution were ratified.

In 1868, Burt Van Horn renounced another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked in Lockport in agriculture and moneylending. Between 1877 and 1882 he was in charge of Rochester's financial administration . He died in Lockport on April 1, 1896.
