John M. Davy

John Madison Davy (born June 29, 1835 in Ottawa , Canada , †  April 21, 1909 in Atlantic City , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In the year he was born in 1835, John Davy came to Rochester, New York State with his parents . He attended public schools in his new home and the Monroe Academy in East Henrietta . In the years 1862 and 1863 he took part in the civil war as a first lieutenant in an infantry unit . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1863, he began working in this profession in Rochester. Between 1868 and 1872 he served as a district attorney in the local Monroe County ; from 1872 to 1875 he was the head of the customs authority in the port of Genesee .

Politically, Davy joined the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1874 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 30th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded George Gilbert Hoskins on March 4, 1875 . Since he was not confirmed in 1876, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1877 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Davy initially practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1889 and 1905 he was a judge on the Supreme Court of New York . Then he worked as a lawyer again. He died in Atlantic City on April 21, 1909 and was buried in Rochester.
