William B. Charles

William Barclay Charles (born April 3, 1861 in Glasgow , Scotland , †  November 25, 1950 in Amsterdam , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1915 and 1917 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Charles attended private schools in his Scottish homeland. In 1884 he emigrated to America, where he worked as a ranch worker in Texas and Mexico . Two years later he settled in the city of Amsterdam, New York State. There he worked in textile manufacturing for most of his life. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1904 and 1906 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . He was also a director of the Amsterdam First National Bank .

In the 1914 congressional elections , Charles was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 30th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Samuel Wallin on March 4, 1915 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1916, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1917 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Charles returned to textile manufacturing until his retirement. He died on November 25, 1950 in Amsterdam, where he was also buried.
