Abraham M. Schermerhorn

Abraham Maus Schermerhorn (born December 11, 1791 in Schenectady , New York , † August 2, 1855 in Savin Rock , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1853 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Abraham Maus Schermerhorn was born in Schenectady County about eight years after the War of Independence ended . He completed his preliminary studies. In 1810 he graduated from Union College in Schenectady. He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1812. In the same year the British-American War broke out. In 1813 he moved to Rochester . There he went about banking. In 1834 he was supervisor of Rochester and in 1837 mayor. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1848 . In the same year the Mexican-American War came to an end. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party .

In the congressional election of 1848 for the 31st Congress , Schermerhorn was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 28th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Elias B. Holmes on March 4, 1849 . Schermerhorn was re-elected once and then left the Congress after March 3, 1853 . He died about six years before the outbreak of the Civil War in Savin Rock, New Haven . His body was then interred in Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester.
