Reuben Robie

Reuben Robie (born July 15, 1799 in Corinth , Orange County , Vermont , †  January 21, 1872 in Bath , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1853 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Reuben Robie attended public schools in his home country. In 1819 he came to Bath, New York State, where he worked in commerce from 1822. Between 1825 and 1830 he was employed as a town clerk in the local administration. In the years 1831 and 1832 he acted as town supervisor . From 1837 to 1841 he was also a postman there. He later was a treasurer in Steuben County from 1844 to 1847 . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1850 Robie was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 30th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded David Rumsey on March 4, 1851 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1852, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1853 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . The issue of slavery was at the center of the dispute.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Reuben Robie returned to trading. He died in Bath on January 21, 1872.
