George Hastings

George Hastings (born March 13, 1807 in Clinton , New York , † August 29, 1866 in Mount Morris , New York) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1855 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Hastings was born in Oneida County about five years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He attended public schools. In 1826 he graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton. He studied law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1830, he began practicing at Mount Morris, Livingston County . Between 1839 and 1848 he was a district attorney. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1852 congressional elections for the 33rd Congress , Hastings was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 28th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Abraham M. Schermerhorn on March 4, 1853 . He then resigned from Congress on March 3, 1855 .

In November 1855, he was elected a judge in Livingston County County Court - a position he held until his death. He died in Mount Morris about a year after the Civil War ended . His body was then buried in the city cemetery.
