Augustus W. Bennet

Augustus Witschief Bennet (born October 7, 1897 in New York City , †  June 5, 1983 in Concord , Massachusetts ) was an American politician . Between 1945 and 1947 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Augustus Bennet was the son of Congressman William Stiles Bennet (1870–1962). He attended public schools in New York City and Washington, DC. In 1918, he graduated from Amherst College . After that he served during the final stages of World War I in the United States Naval Reserve Flying Corps . After a subsequent law degree at Columbia University in New York City and his admission as a lawyer in 1921, he began to work in Newburgh in this profession. Between 1923 and 1944 he worked for the federal government as an arbitrator in bankruptcy proceedings. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .

In the 1944 congressional election , Bennet was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 29th  constituency of New York, where he succeeded Dean P. Taylor , who moved to the 33rd district, on January 3, 1945 . Since he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party in 1946, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1947 . During this time the Second World War ended .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Bennet practiced as a lawyer again. In the meantime he lived in Laguna Hills . He died on June 5, 1983 in Concord.
