Katharine St. George

Katharine Price Collier St. George (born July 12, 1894 in Bridgnorth , England , †  May 2, 1983 in Tuxedo Park , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1947 and 1965 she represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Katherine St. George, nee Collier, was born in England to American parents. In 1896 she came to Tuxedo Park, New York with her parents, where she attended private schools. She returned to Europe at the age of eleven and continued her education there in England, France and Germany . In 1914 she settled again in Tuxedo Park. There she embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1926 and 1949 she was a member of the local Park Council. She was a board member from 1942 to 1948 and then even chairman of the Republican Party in Orange County . In June 1944 she took delegates to the Republican National Convention in Chicago . From 1926 to 1946 she was also a member of the Tuxedo Park School Committee, which she had chaired since 1930.

In the 1946 congressional election , St. George was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 29th  constituency of New York , where she succeeded Augustus W. Bennet on January 3, 1947 . After eight re-elections, she was able to complete nine legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1965 . In 1953 she moved to the 28th district of her state, which she represented in Congress between 1953 and 1963. In her last legislative period until 1965 she was the representative of the 27th electoral district. Her time in Congress saw the start of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement . In addition, the Vietnam War began at that time .

In 1964, Katharine St. George was not re-elected. She was later chairman of the Town Committee in Tuxedo Park. She was a cousin of President Franklin D. Roosevelt . She had a daughter with her husband George St. George. She died in Tuxedo Park on May 2, 1983.
