Bridgnorth is a town in the county of Shropshire in the heart of England . It has 12,374 inhabitants ( 2012 update ) and was the administrative seat of the district of the same name, which was dissolved in 2009 .

The medieval city is divided by the Severn into an upper and lower city because the right bank is about 60 m higher than the left. The river shaped the development from an old strategic crossing point to the busy market town that Bridgnorth is today.

Attractions

With its old houses and pubs , steep river steps, the ruins of Bridgnorth Castle and the small funicular, it is a popular destination.

The Church of St. Leonard goes back to Norman times (traces of it on the S tower), but from 1861 it was almost completely rebuilt in a neo-Gothic style. Only the joist ceiling above the nave , which was built in the 17th century, was preserved. The numerous old cast iron memorial plaques are interesting.

Other attractions in Bridgnorth include the Bridgnorth Cliff Railway (the oldest and steepest electric funicular in the country) and Daniels Mill , a water mill .

Bridgnorth is the terminus of the Severn Valley Railway from Kidderminster .

Town twinning

Bridgnorth's twin cities are Schrobenhausen in Bavaria and Thiers in the French department of Puy-de-Dôme , which are also related to each other.
