William T. Lawrence

William Thomas Lawrence (born May 7, 1788 in New York City , † October 25, 1859 in Cayutaville , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Samuel Lawrence was his brother.

Career

William Thomas Lawrence attended community schools. Then he went about commercial business. During the British-American War he served in the 4th  Regiment of the New York State Artillery . In 1823 he moved to Cayuga County . There he pursued agricultural activities. In 1838 he held the post of justice of the peace. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party . In the 1846 congressional elections for the 30th Congress , Lawrence was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 26th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Samuel S. Ellsworth on March 4, 1847 . He retired from the after March 3, 1849 Congress of. His time in Congress was overshadowed by the Mexican-American War . He died in his country house near Cayutaville about two years before the outbreak of civil war . His body was then interred in the family cemetery on Shore Road in the Borough of Queens .
