Gamaliel Henry Barstow (born July 20, 1784 in Sharon , Litchfield County , Connecticut , † March 30, 1865 in Nichols , New York ) was an American doctor, judge and politician.

Private life

Gamaliel Barstow moved to Tioga County , New York, in 1812 , where he worked on his father's farm. During this time he also worked as a teacher. He then studied medicine in Great Barrington ( Massachusetts ) and finally practiced medicine. He was also appointed First Judge at Tioga County Court in 1818 , a position he held until 1823. When he later settled in Nichols, he worked as a doctor again and went to agricultural activities.

Political career

Barstow was a member of the New York State Assembly between 1815 and 1819 . He then had a seat in the New York Senate between 1819 and 1822 . He was then re-elected to the New York State Assembly, where he served between 1823 and 1826. During this time he was elected Treasurer of New York and held this office from 1825 to 1828 and again from 1838 to 1839. He was also 1830 as a supervisor of Nichols. He was then elected to the 22nd US Congress for the Anti-Masonic Party , where he served from March 4, 1831 to March 3, 1833. Barstow ran unsuccessfully as Whig for the office of Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1836 .

He died on March 30, 1865 in Nichols and was buried in Ashbury Cemetery .
