George W. Batten

George Washington Batten (born February 22, 1856 in Lockport , New York , † September 14, 1922 in Buffalo , New York) was an American businessman and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was Treasurer of State of New York in 1914 .

Career

George Washington Batten's childhood was overshadowed by the Civil War . He was deputy sheriff from 1882 to 1884 and sheriff from 1885 to 1887 in Niagara County . While serving as sheriff, he named his father, Joseph Batten, deputy sheriff, who was himself sheriff in Niagara County from 1876 to 1878. After the end of his tenure, he worked in the insurance industry.

From 1890 to 1895 he was the chairman of the Democratic Committee in Niagara County and from 1895 to 1915 a member of the New York State Democratic Committee. In 1898 he ran for the office of Secretary of State of New York, but suffered a defeat to the Republican John T. McDonough .

Batten was Deputy Treasurer of State of New York under Julius Hauser and John J. Kennedy . When Kennedy died by suicide on February 15, 1914, Batten was acting as acting Treasurer of State. Ten days later, Homer D. Call of the Progressive Party was elected Treasurer of State for the remainder of Kennedy's term by members of the Democratic Party and the Progressive Party in the New York State Legislature . Batten and all other democratic officials in the tax authorities retained their positions.
