David Thomas (politician, 1762)
David Thomas (born June 11, 1762 in Pelham , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † November 27, 1831 in Providence , Rhode Island ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1801 and 1808 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
David Thomas grew up during the British colonial era, studied and completed his preparatory studies. During the Revolutionary War he served as a volunteer in 1777 , then he joined the Fifth Massachusetts Regiment as a corporal in 1781 and rose to a sergeant in the Third Massachusetts Regiment during the war . A year after the end of the war he moved to Salem (New York), where he ran a tavern for several years . In 1786 he was appointed captain in the New York National Guard. He then rose to major general in the Northern Division of New York in 1805 . Thomas pursued commercial business. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1794 and between 1798 and 1800 . Between 1797 and 1800 he was the Town Supervisor of Salem. He also worked as a justice of the peace between 1798 and 1801, 1804 and 1811.
As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the 1800 congressional elections , Thomas was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Thompson on March 4, 1801 . In 1802 he ran for a seat in Congress in the twelfth constituency of New York. After a successful election, he entered his service on March 4, 1803 as the first MP of the district. He was re-elected twice in a row, but resigned from his seat on May 1, 1808.
On February 5, 1808 he was appointed State Treasurer of New York - a position he held until February 8, 1810. Thomas held the post a second time between February 18, 1812 and February 10, 1813. He died on November 27, 1831 in Providence and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Salem.
