Max N. Rose (born November 28, 1986 in Brooklyn , New York City , New York ) is an American politician and veteran . As a member of the Democratic Party , he has held the 11th seat of the state of New York in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . Rose served as a platoon leader in the Afghan War between 2012 and 2013 and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart .

Life

childhood and education

Max Rose was born in Brooklyn, New York. His father was a medical laboratory manager and his mother is a professor of social policy at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Rose is of Jewish descent; his paternal grandfather emigrated from Odessa to the United States at the age of 14 . Rose spent most of his childhood in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn .

Rose attended Poly Prep Country Day School in Dyker Heights , which he graduated with A-Levels in 2004 . After finishing school, he studied history at Wesleyan University in Middletown , Connecticut, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2008 . Rose became politically active during his student days. In 2008, he interned with future Senator Cory Booker while he was mayor of Newark , New Jersey. Rose later earned a master's degree in public administration from the London School of Economics and Political Science .

Military career

Max Rose applied to the United States Army in 2010 . He has served in the 1st Armored Division since 2008 . From 2012 he was used as a platoon leader in the Afghan war. In 2013 he was wounded in a booby trap in the north of the Afghan province of Kandahar . In the same year, Max Rose was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge , the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart . Since then, Rose has served as a company commander in the New York Army National Guards in the 69th Infantry Regiment.

Political career

US House of Representatives

In 2018, Max Rose stood as a candidate for the election of the 11th seat of the state of New York in the United States House of Representatives and came against five other candidates to 65 percent of the vote. In the runoff election on October 18, 2018, Rose prevailed with 52.8 percent of the vote against the previous Republican incumbent Dan Donovan . Rose thus won as a Democrat in an actually conservative district, he is currently only the second democratic seat holder in the 11th district since 1981.

Positions

Max Rose is committed to improving the infrastructure in Staten Island and Brooklyn. He also advocates lowering the age of entry into Medicare health insurance from the current age of 65 to 55, general public health care and broader access to medical treatment for opium addiction . He also supports the introduction of background checks before buying weapons and the ban on assault rifles . Rose is also committed to re-enter the United States in the Paris Convention for the carbon dioxide emissions to reduce the country.

After the politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez declared in March 2019 that the United States Congress could have relied on other American institutions instead of launching an unplanned invasion after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , Rose replied that the war in Afghanistan would end but he disagreed insofar as he did not believe that the reaction to the attacks was reprehensible.

Max Rose is married and lives in Staten Island .
