George Tibbits
George Tibbits (born January 14, 1763 in Warwick , Kent County , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , † July 19, 1849 in Troy , Rensselaer County , New York ) was an American politician and member of the US House of Representatives for New York.
Career
Tibbits pursued classical studies and worked as a dealer in Lansingburgh (New York) in 1784 . Then he moved to Troy (New York) in 1797 , where he continued his activity as a merchant. He decided to pursue a political career, which was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1800 .
Tibbits was elected a federalist to the 8th Congress , where he served from March 4, 1803 to March 3, 1805. He did not stand for re-election in 1804. He later served in the New York Senate from 1815 to 1818 . During this time, he ran unsuccessfully in 1816 for the office of Lieutenant Governor ( Engl. Lieutenanant Governor ) of New York.
He was a member of the Commission on State Prisons , which produced a favorable report on Auburn Prison in 1824 . Then he was a member of the commission charged with building Sing Sing Prison . He later served as Mayor of Troy from 1830 to 1836. He died in Troy in 1849 and was buried there in Oakwood Cemetery .
