Nathan Wilson

Nathan Wilson (born December 23, 1758 in Bolton , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † July 25, 1834 in Salem , New York ) was a British- American lawyer and politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives in 1808 and 1809 .

Career

Nathan Wilson was born in Bolton, Worcester County during the British colonial era . The Wilson family then moved to Greenwich , Hampshire County , where he attended school. During the Revolutionary War , he served in Massachusetts regiments in 1777 and 1780 . Then he moved to New Perth (now Salem) in Washington County . He enlisted as a private in the Albany County Militia's 16th Regiment . Governor George Clinton appointed him an adjutant in the Washington County Militia Regiment in 1791 . He was a Town Collector in 1801 and 1802 . Between 1802 and 1806 he served as a sheriff in Washington County.

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . He was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in a by-election on June 3, 1808 in the twelfth constituency of New York to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of David Thomas . On March 3, 1809, he left the Congress .

Between 1808 and 1816 he held the post of justice of the peace. He worked in agriculture. He died on July 25, 1834 near Salem and was then buried there in Evergreen Cemetery .
