John Nicholson (politician, 1765)

John Nicholson (* 1765 in Herkimer , New York Province; † January 20, 1820 there ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1809 and 1811 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Nicholson grew up during the British colonial era. He received a modest education. Nicholson studied law , got his lawyer license, and then started practicing. He held various local offices. From 1782 to 1785 he represented Ulster County and in 1810 Orange County in the New York State Assembly .

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the congressional election of 1808 for the 11th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Josiah Masters on March 4, 1809 .
