Clarkson Nott Potter (born April 25, 1825 in Schenectady , New York , † January 23, 1882 in New York City ) was an American civil engineer , lawyer and politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives between 1869 and 1875 and between 1877 and 1879 .

Career

Clarkson Nott Potter studied and completed his preparatory studies. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1842 and from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1843 as a civil engineer. He then worked in 1843 as a surveyor in Wisconsin . He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1846 and then began practicing in New York City the following year . In 1863 he became a trustee at Union College - a position he held until 1882. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1868 for the 41st Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of New York , where he succeeded William H. Robertson on March 4, 1869 . He was re-elected once. In 1872 he ran in the eleventh constituency of New York for the 43rd Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Charles St. John on March 4, 1873 . Since he on a run again in 1874 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1875 Congress of. He was then elected to the 45th Congress in the twelfth electoral district of New York in 1876 , where he succeeded Nathaniel H. Odell on March 4, 1877 . Since he refused to run again in 1878 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1879. As a Congressman, he chaired the Committee on Pacific Railroads (45th Congress).

During his congressional time, he took part in the Democratic National Conventions in 1872 and 1876 . Then he was president of the Democratic New York State Conventions in 1875 and 1877 . In 1879 he ran unsuccessfully for the post of lieutenant governor of New York. Then he was president of the American Bar Association in 1881 and 1882 . He died in New York City on January 23, 1882 and was then buried in Vale Cemetery in Schenectady.
