David Abel Russell
David Abel Russell (* 1780 in Petersburg , New York , † November 24, 1861 in Salem , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1835 and 1841 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
David Abel Russell was born in Petersburg during the War of Independence . He completed his preliminary studies. Then he studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Salem. He was appointed justice of the peace in 1807 and was admitted as counselor in 1809 . In 1813 he was a district attorney in the northern judicial district of New York. He served in the New York State Assembly in 1816, 1830, and 1833 .
Politically, he belonged to the anti-Jacksonian faction at the time. In the 1834 congressional elections for the 24th Congress , Russell was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the twelfth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Henry C. Martindale on March 4, 1835 . He joined the Whig Party . In 1836 he successfully ran for the 25th Congress . He was re-elected and then left the Congress on March 3, 1841 . As a congressman, he chaired the Committee on Claims ( 26th Congress ).
He died on November 24, 1861 in Salem and was then buried in Evergreen Cemetery . A few months earlier, the civil war had broken out.
