24th United States Congress
The 24th Congress of the United States , consisting of the House and Senate , was the legislature of the United States . Its legislative period lasted from March 4, 1835 to March 4, 1837. All members of the House of Representatives and a third of the senators ( Class II ) were elected in the 1834 congressional elections. There was a majority in both chambers for the Democratic Party , whose supporters are often referred to as Jacksonians at the time. The congress met in the American capital Washington, DC At that time the United States consisted of 24 states. In the course of the legislative period, two other states were added, Arkansas and Michigan . Andrew Jackson was the president . The distribution of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the 1830 census .

- 1835: The so-called Toledo War takes place over the city of Toledo between the US state of Ohio and the Michigan Territory .
- October 2, 1835: Beginning of the Texan War of Independence . It goes until April 21, 1836, when Mexico must recognize the independent Republic of Texas .
- February 3, 1836: The fledgling United States Whig Party holds its first regional convention in Albany , New York . December 4th is the first federal party conference in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania .
- February 23, 1836: Beginning of the Battle of Alamo . It lasts until March 6th and ends with the Texans being defeated by Mexican troops.
- April 20, 1836: Establishment of the Wisconsin Territory .
- June 15, 1836: Arkansas becomes the 25th state in the USA.
- November 3 - December 7, 1836: Vice President Martin Van Buren prevails over William Henry Harrison in the US presidential election . However, there is no winner for the office of Vice President. He was not elected by the Senate until February 8, 1837 (a process that is unique in American history to this day). Finally, the Democrat Richard Mentor Johnson is elected .
- 1836: In the congressional elections there is a majority for the Democratic Party in both chambers.
- January 26, 1837: Michigan becomes the 26th state in the United States.
