After Arkansas had initially sent only one MP to Washington , the number temporarily rose to seven; since 1963, the state has only had four members. The election was usually carried out separately by congressional electoral district ; a state-wide election (“at large”) there was only in 1873 for the fourth and 1883 for the fifth mandate. From 1861 to 1868, the state's seats remained vacant after Arkansas' secession.
