Ed Bethune

Edwin Ruthvine "Ed" Bethune Jr. (born December 19, 1935 in Pocahontas , Arkansas ) is an American politician . Between 1979 and 1985 he represented the second constituency of the state of Arkansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ed Bethune attended Pocahontas High School until 1953 . He was then from 1954 to 1957 sergeant in the United States Marine Corps ; he was also used in Korea . After his military service he studied law at the University of Arkansas until 1963 . Following his admission to the bar in the same year, he began to work in this profession in Pocahontas. In 1972 he was also admitted to the bar at the United States Supreme Court . Between 1963 and 1964, Bethune was the assistant district attorney in Randolph County . He then worked as a special investigator for the FBI between 1964 and 1968 . In 1970 and 1971 he was a prosecutor in the first judicial district of his home state. From 1973 to 1976, Bethune was the chairman of the board of directors of the Ninth District Federal Home Loan Bank .

Politically, Bethune joined the Republican Party . In 1972 he unsuccessfully applied for the office of Attorney General of Arkansas. In the congressional elections of 1978 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the second district of Arkansas , where he succeeded Jim Tucker on January 3, 1979 . After two re-elections in 1980 and 1982, he was able to remain in Congress for three terms until January 3, 1985 .

In 1984 Bethune decided not to run for the US House of Representatives again. Instead, he unsuccessfully applied for a seat in the US Senate : he was defeated by the Democratic incumbent David Pryor . Between 1986 and 1988, Bethune was Republican Party leader in Arkansas. After leaving Congress, he worked as a lawyer in a law firm in the federal capital Washington. Ed Bethune now lives in Maryland with his wife Lana . The couple have two children.
