William Asa Hutchinson (* 3. December 1950 in Bentonville , Arkansas ) is an American politician of the Republican Party and, since January 13, 2015 Governor of the State of Arkansas. Between 1997 and 2001 he represented the third constituency of the state of Arkansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Asa Hutchinson is the brother of former US Senator and Congressman Tim Hutchinson . He attended Springdale High School until 1968 and then studied at Bob Jones University in Greenville ( South Carolina ). This was followed by a law degree at the University of Arkansas until 1975 . After his admission to the bar, Hutchinson served as an attorney for the City of Bentonville from 1977 to 1978. Between 1982 and 1985 he was a federal attorney for western Arkansas.

1986 Hutchinson ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate; four years later, he also unsuccessfully applied for the post of Attorney General of Arkansas. Between 1990 and 1995, Hutchinson was the leader of the Republican Party in his state. In the 1996 congressional elections, he was elected to the US House of Representatives to succeed his brother Tim in the third district of Arkansas. In 1998 and 2000 he was confirmed in this office. In 1998 he was a member of the commission that organized the unsuccessful impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton .

After Hutchinson was appointed director of the DEA Drug Administration in 2001 , he resigned from his seat in Congress . He held this office until 2003. Then he was department head in the newly created Department of Homeland Security of the United States until 2005 . There he was responsible for border security and transport security. In 2006, he ran for Arkansas governor , but lost to Democrat Mike Beebe .

In 2013 he was part of a bipartisan commission to investigate allegations of torture .

For the 2014 gubernatorial election , he was nominated again as a candidate for his party after he was able to prevail in the primaries . In the gubernatorial election on November 4, 2014, Hutchinson won 55.4 percent of the vote over Democratic Congressman Mike Ross , for whom 41 percent of the electorate voted. On January 13, 2015, he succeeded the Democrat Mike Beebe , who was excluded from running for another two terms.

In the 2018 gubernatorial elections , Hutchinson was confirmed in office with 65.3% of the vote.
