Pearl Peden Oldfield (born December 2, 1876 in Cotton Plant , Woodruff County , Arkansas , † April 12, 1962 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1929 and 1931 she represented the second constituency of the state of Arkansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Pearl Peden attended her homeland public schools and Arkansas College in Batesville . She married longtime Congressman William Allan Oldfield . After the death of her husband, she was elected in a by-election in the second district of Arkansas as the Democratic Party candidate to succeed him in the US House of Representatives in Washington.

This made her the first Arkansas woman to be elected to Congress . She stayed there from January 9, 1929 to March 3, 1931. Election of a family member to succeed a mandate holder is not the norm in the United States, but has occurred several times throughout the history of Congress. After the end of her time in Congress, Oldfield withdrew from politics and devoted herself to her private interests.
