William L. Terry

William Leake Terry (born September 27, 1850 in Wadesboro , Anson County , North Carolina , † November 4, 1917 in Little Rock , Arkansas ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1901 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Arkansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1857, William Terry moved in with his parents in the Tippah County in the state of Mississippi , four years later in the Pulaski County , Arkansas. He graduated from Bingham's Military Academy and by 1872 Trinity College in North Carolina. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in his new profession. Politically, Terry joined the Democratic Party . Between 1878 and 1879 he was a member of the Arkansas Senate ; in 1879 he was president of this body. Between 1879 and 1885 he was a litigator for the City of Little Rock. In 1886 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the congressional election of 1890 Terry was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth district of Arkansas , where he replaced John H. Rogers on March 4, 1891 . After he was re-elected four times, he was able to complete a total of five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1901. For the elections of 1900 he was no longer nominated by his party. After leaving the House of Representatives, Terry worked as a lawyer in Little Rock. He died there in November 1917. William Terry was the father of David Dickson Terry , who also sat for Arkansas in the US House of Representatives between 1933 and 1943.
