William H. Cate
William Henderson Cate (born November 11, 1839 in Murfreesboro , Tennessee , † August 23, 1899 in Toledo , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1890 and from 1891 to 1893 he represented the first constituency of the state of Arkansas in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Cate attended primary school in his home and a private school in Abingdon ( Virginia ). He then studied until 1857 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville . In the following years, Cate worked as a teacher. During the Civil War he took it to the army of the Confederate States to the Captain .
In 1865, Cate moved to Jonesboro , Arkansas. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1866, he began to work there in his new profession. He became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1871 and 1873 he was an MP in the Arkansas House of Representatives and from 1878 he was a prosecutor. In 1884, Cate became a judge in the Arkansas Second Judicial District. In 1887 he founded the Bank of Jonesboro .
In the congressional election of 1888, Cate was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he replaced Poindexter Dunn on March 4, 1889 . His election was contested by Lewis P. Featherstone , Union Labor Party candidate. After this challenge was granted, Cate had to give up his seat to Featherstone on March 5, 1890 after exactly one year in Congress . In the elections of 1890, however, he managed his return to the US House of Representatives. There he was able to complete a full legislative period between March 4, 1891 and March 3, 1893.
Cate waived another candidacy in 1892 and returned to working as a lawyer in Jonesboro. He died on August 23, 1899 while visiting Toledo, Ohio, and was buried in Jonesboro.
