Samuel W. Peel

Samuel West Peel (born September 13, 1831 in Batesville , Arkansas , † December 18, 1924 in Bentonville , Arkansas) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the fourth and from 1885 to 1893 the fifth constituency of the state of Arkansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Peel attended the public schools in his home country and then became a clerk at the Carroll County District Court . During the Civil War he went into the army of the Confederate States to the Colonel on. In the meantime he commanded an infantry regiment from Arkansas. After the war, Peel studied law. After his admission as a lawyer in 1865, he began to work in Carrollton in his new profession. In 1867 he moved to Bentonville, where he also worked as a lawyer. Between 1873 and 1876, Peel was a district attorney in the Arkansas Fourth Judicial District. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In 1882, Peel was elected to the US House of Representatives in the fourth district of Arkansas. There he replaced Thomas M. Gunter on March 4, 1883 . In the next election in 1884 he ran successfully in the fifth district, where he was elected to succeed Clifton R. Breckinridge . After several re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until March 3, 1893. Between 1887 and 1889 and from 1891 to 1893 he was chairman of the Indian Committee. For the elections in 1892 he was no longer nominated by his party.

After his tenure in Congress, he worked again as a lawyer in Bentonville and Washington, DC until 1915 , after which he retired. Samuel Peel died in December 1924 and was buried in Bentonville.
