John Boozman (born December 10, 1950 in Shreveport , Louisiana ) is an American politician . the Republican Party . Since January 3, 2011 he represents the state of Arkansas in the US Senate ; he had previously served in the United States House of Representatives since 2001 .

biography

John Boozman attended Northside High School at Fort Smith and then from 1969 to 1972 the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville . He graduated from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis in 1977 , a college of optometry . He subsequently practiced this profession and was a co-founder of an eye clinic in Rogers . He was also active as a rancher and was a member of the Rogers School Board.

In 2001, he ran for a seat in Congress in the Arkansas third constituency , which became vacant after the resignation of MP Asa Hutchinson . Boozman prevailed in the primary of his party against State Senator Gunner DeLay and then won the actual election with 55.5 percent of the vote against the Democrat Mike Hathorn . It was confirmed four times by the electorate in the following years, sometimes even without a democratic opponent.

Boozman decided not to run for the House of Representatives again in 2010 and instead ran for election to the Senate. Here the Democratic incumbent Blanche Lincoln stood for re-election, which was very unlikely due to poor poll numbers from the outset. The area code of his party Boozman decided safely before Jim Holt for itself, the 2004 had lost to Lincoln. In the polls before the election, he consistently led by a clear margin over the Democrat; In the end, he won with 57.9 percent of the vote and a lead of 20 percentage points.

On January 3, 2011, Boozman took over from Blanche Lincoln in the Senate. He is also a member of the International Conservation Caucus , a non-partisan association of members of Congress for nature conservation. Since he was confirmed in office in 2016, he will also represent his state in the US Senate for the next six years. His new term runs until January 3, 2023.

Boozman is married and has three daughters. He lives privately with his family in Rogers.
